Today, I weeded along the northern side of the house - more particularly, took out the mint that springs up so readily, ever since I had a mint bed there. I just used to throw mint from elsewhere in the garden along this side of the house, thinking it would be a fragrant way to take up some of the lawn and minimise the mowing. However, it always looked scraggly and messy - and eventually my mother-in-law on a visit pulled it all out, or cut it down. Either way, many of the roots remained, and the forest was starting to spring up again.
While weeding, my mind drifted to the Netherlands and my desire to go there, with the family. Moments later I came across a tulip bulb and stem. It felt like a reminder: do the weeding, and the real treasure will come through. In fact, there turned out to be three small tulip bulbs - I don't know whether they were dropped there, deliberately planted (unlikely), or whether (most likely) some small 'no hopers' were tossed there just in case they did something with themselves.
After the weeding, I put compost around the tulips, and a couple of logs in front, to start a new planting bed. It reminds me of Jesus' parable about the fig tree that doesn't bear fruit, and the gardener asks for 'one more year', puts manure around the fig tree and sees if it will bear fruit next year.
